As a recent Upstate New York transplant, sometimes Brooklyn can feel like the center of the musical universe. As such, I was pleasantly surprised to find the Poughkeepsie based Sad Cactus Records, a label formed with the express purpose of showcasing talent from the Hudson Valley. As much great music as there is in the city, its always nice when artists from the rest of the state are given the attention they deserve as well. Sad Cactus's newest release "Gin and Coupons" comes from former Beacon, NY resident William Smith AKA Pre-Willy.
Although Pre-Willy has recently transplanted to Brooklyn (see what I mean?), the five song collection was recorded in Beacon, a few hours away the city. The lo-fi EP was the product of late night recording and small town bedrooms and will be available on November 13th. Below we have the premier of the EP's first single. An ode to a girl he can't get off his mind, "Caroline" features Pre-Willy's schmoozy vocals atop brisk indie pop before ending the track with an abrupt meltdown.
UPCOMING SHOWS:
11/19 - Brooklyn, NY @ Gateway
11/27 - New York, NY @ Elvis Guesthouse
"Gin & Coupons" Tracklist:
1. Boo Lovin Joose
2. Call It Whatever
