Ava Brennan is one of the best guitarists in Chicago. Today we’re thrilled to premiere the heady and heavy “Event Horizon,” Brennan’s latest since last summer’s “Home.”
Inspired by dreams, a film, and a healing black eye, “Event Horizon” is just below the tip of the iceberg; the sound of breaking the surface tension of consciousness. Brennan’s chord progressions are captivating and her lyrics hypnotic as she slips beneath with meditative clarity. “Event Horizon” is a very pretty song that maintains a transcendent depth from start to finish.
Here’s what Brennan had to say about the new track:
“I began writing [“Event Horizon”] after watching the film Waking Life by Richard Linklater, a jarring rotoscope film about dream consciousness. I experienced a spontaneous moment of long-held eye contact with my friend Annie right after finishing the movie. We felt like we were floating and falling. That experience and the surreal atmosphere conjured by the Waking Life soundtrack inspired me. I found a kindred chord progression and fingerpicking melody.”
You can listen to Ava Brennan’s music everywhere aside from Spotify, as Brennan is one of the many independent Chicago musicians taking part in the collective boycott of the streaming service. You can read more about the boycott here, and catch Ava Brennan at Stella Fest this weekend. Catch Ava Brennan on tour this summer and listen to “Event Horizon” below:
