As we all head into the weekend, we’re happy to share a few of our favorite new releases, out this week (in splendid alphabetical order). The write-ups are all kept brief and bite sized, snippets to catch your interest. There’s a lot of great music out every week and these are just some of the many we think you should check out.
Self Released

Kingston, NY trio $500 have self-released their debut album, Twelve Eyes, a new indie rock ripper that's built on enormous guitars and hard fought melodic charm. A recent fixture of the Hudson Valley scene, there's a warmth to their sound that seems to be captured best at maximum volume, the band opting for a sonic simplicity that really compliments the weight of the songs.

BRNDA return with Total Pain, a new dose of idiosyncratic and energetic post-punk. Their tightly wound art punk propulsion is fused with pop clarity and a springy rhythmic recoil. They groove and weave, darting between Leah Gage’s infectious melodies and Dave Lesser's sardonic wit while the band wrap themselves around Gage’s perfectly buoyant drumbeats and a deluge of guitars that seem to bounce off the padded walls.

The evolution of Guerilla Toss is a thing of beauty, a band that has progressed in ways that most artists can hardly conceive. You’re Weird Now, produced by Stephen Malkmus, is another definitive statement in their catalog, an unabashed freak pop record that’s outwardly exuberant at all costs. There's an upfront emphasis on the “pop” element with surging melodic resonance that hits like distilled sunshine.

Brian Reichert has been reshaping the world of Nyxy Nyx since the very beginning but Cult Classics Vol. I marks a significant change, the first full-band studio recording for the project. With the strength of a sextet in full force, the record is the equivalent of a beautiful rain storm, both hazy and renewing as they traverse between slow dripped malaise and sludgy indie folk.

Originally released for Record Store Day, Swell Maps' Peel Sessions collection gets a wide release after forty years with a fresh remaster and everything else in tact from the bands late 70s and early 80s in-studio recordings. The band's ramshackle take on post-punk is a peak of the early art punk era and a major influence on so many bands in the decades that followed.
