Sunshy’s latest single “Poison” is yet another blast of focused, hooky noise pop from the Chicago group. It is the final single off their upcoming album I don’t care what comes next, due out this summer via MakeOutMusic Records. Sunshy has quickly made a name for themselves by combining heavy guitars with pop influenced grooves on previous tracks, “On the Train,” “Dissolve,” and “Hyacinth,” all steeped in classic shoegaze and dream-pop sounds. “Poison” is their most dynamic release yet, with sudden and direct changes throughout, noisy aggression fracturing through intricate, gleaming soundscapes.
The track begins with a welcoming intro and then lifts off the ground into a gorgeous verse. Songwriters Wes Park and Sascha Deng’s weaving harmonies are in perfect sync, shimmering synths fill the air and a laid-back drum groove keeps all afloat. Everything is picturesque when suddenly the bottom drops out and an explosive guitar riff and thrashing drums jolt you awake. These outbursts of high-gain intensity keep you from getting too comfortable in Sunshy’s lushly constructed world, giving the track some real bite. Proving themselves equally capable of the sweet-on-the-ears grooves of Alvvays and the catchy, noisy chaos of Feeble Little Horse, Sunshy continues to release exciting and original sounds. “Poison” also has a great, dreamlike video that finds the band lounging in the park watching planes drift in and out of the city, song lyrics and other musings flickering across the screen.
Catch Sunshy’s single release show at Chicago’s Sleeping Village on Saturday, June 1st, alongside Precocious Neophyte, Coral Grief, and Golomb.
