Hark! Sunforger of Montreal has returned! And lo! With a new lineup! Spencer Curtis is joined by bassist-sibling Piper Curtis, guitarist Chris Hauer, and drummer Davita Guslits for Sunforger, the band’s first full length since 2018’s classic Mono No Aware. On their latest, the Canadian post-grunge favorites lean into their strengths: concision, melody, and tone. Sunforger explores personal growth with razor thin songwriting and harsh stop-go riffs. The guitars and bass spindle sinister down tunings into Sunforger’s distinctly tense rhythms and Curtis’ deadpan delivery. There aren’t many frills to Sunforger songs, except for the ones they put there. This album is clean, the band sounds terrific, and we’re excited to be premiering the record in full today.
Sunforger is the first record out under the band’s new name—an important milestone marking their most confident and realized statement yet. As per the record’s press release, Sunforger is about “the comfort and stability of carefully maintained ‘real life’ leads to isolation, stagnation, and frustration; the only way out is to change, spurred from within, and to re-examine your motivations and perspectives.” If you’ve been tuned into Sunforger since the beginning, or perhaps are familiar with DECENTCLUB’s stellar catalog, this will be a treat for you.
Sunforger is out digitally tomorrow (7/21), streaming exclusively at Post-Trash today, and will be out physically on 7/28 via The Cooked Raw Label (Foam, A Country Western, Clothesline from Hell).
