London’s Qlowski are set to release their full length debut, Quale Futuro? on June 4th via Feel It Records (Spread Joy, Leopardo, Silicone Prairie) and Maple Death Records (Whitney K, Cindy Lee, Tropical Trash). The album is a sharp blend of early post-punk, romanticized new wave, and a bit of twee punk for extra jangle. Led by the duo of Michele Tellarini (guitar, keys, vocals), and Cecilia Corapi (keys, vocals), their sound is dark, dreamy, and most of all, impeccably tight, thanks to their steely rhythm section, Danny Smartt (bass, clarinet) and Christian Billard (drums) of Anna Altman/Turnip King. Having shared a dynamic pair of singles with the Corapi led “A Woman” and the Tellarini led “Lotta Continua,” the band prove they have a great deal to offer after a trail of promising EPs and singles.
“Folk Song” is the third single and not necessarily what you might imagine when the words “folk song” come to mind. After a carefully presented introduction, the band take an immediate sway into their moody post-punk, setting the tone with oscillating synths and a stellar rhythm that really lays the detached framework. There’s almost a baroque sense to the vocals, with the intensity crashing directly in time with the swarming guitars while the motorik beat churns forever forward. The songs wraps itself around a galloping beat and sharp riffs, moving from the poetic to the serene without notice.
