Gary, Indiana are from Manchester, UK… which is not to say that Gary, Indiana is in Manchester… but that a band from Manchester, for whatever reason, decided to name themselves after Gary, Indiana. With two singles now out in the world (one of which is premiering here), the duo are establishing themselves with an avant-garde approach to noise rock. Valentine Caulfield (vocals) and Scott Fair (guitars/production) are mutating ideas from electronic skronk to French-pop, skewing everything into a grimy thud that pulls from the depths.
“Pashto,” the band’s second single (following the equally impressive “Berlin,” opens with an avalanche of drums, slowly seeping in massive spots of noise and manipulated distortion, eventually flooding the rhythmic stampede with an unwavering sea of no-wave gloom. Caulfield’s vocals (which are entirely in French) are the perfect balance to the noise, stern and cold with a post-punk resolve, her voice floats over the noise, shifting with the song from brutal dissonance to electronic boogie and back again into the chaos. It’s certainly interesting and we’re willing to bet you’ve never heard anything quite like this.
