Brooklyn trio Spit are a band to watch. Since the release of their sophomore album, Dead Broke For Life, the band have been working their way into the hearts of the DIY scene, one great show at a time. Starting to earn a reputation in the "your favorite band's favorite band" club, there's good reason for it, Spit are a band that understand dynamic songwriting. The band's self-coined "mozzarella grunge" is, as the genre description alludes, filled with tongue-in-cheek humor, but it's their dissolving structures that hurtle like a rickety wooden roller coaster... good thing you just ate all that pasta. Set to release Ego In Drag, their highly anticipated new album in early June, we're thrilled to share the premiere of the record's combustible title track.
"Ego In Drag" is Spit in peak form: playing it cool, mounting tension without suspicion, and steadily building toward a swarm of tangled glory. Recorded, engineered, and mixed by Dan Angel and James Ryskalchick at The Sex Dungeon (before it's untimely demise), the trio of John Romano (guitar/vocals), Joe Romano (bass/backing vocals), and Gianfranco Nuschese (drums) lay the framework for the song's blistering crescendo from the intro's jagged start, but shift the perspective to the song's patient verses. Digging into a dense jumble of knotted progressions with bubbling pop melodies, Spit divert the chaos to come into something both sticky and sweet. As "Ego In Drag" winds its way forward, ripping between a dense trail of syrupy hooks, the band dive headfirst into an avalanche of complex rhythms, unpredictable bursts of sludge, and caterwauling destruction, obliterating any tension with sweet, loud, release.
Those "in the know" already know. Those who don't soon will. Spit are coming.
Spit's Ego In Drag is out June 11th. The band will celebrate with release shows in both Brooklyn and Philadelphia.
