Katie Lau isn’t slowing down. As Painted Zeros, she released her album Floriography last year and now she’s back on September 16 with a new EP entitled Daylily. Just like Floriography, Lau wrote, performed, and mixed all of the music. We’re thrilled to premiere the new single "Love Triangle (I was Jolene)".
Framed with a tried and true chord progression, the song takes on the characteristic of a Daylily which is a flower that blooms bright and beautiful but only for a brief time (usually no more than a day). Like the sun rising on a new morning, the song has a poppier feel, but the subject matter is anything but bright and the bloom fades and dies as Lau finds her love for another isn’t returned. Even worse, as far as her lover is concerned, she is the other woman. “Knowing she comes first is what hurts the most..So surprised you see, When I learned you loved her, not me.” As the title suggests, it’s a role reversal of the Dolly Parton song “Jolene.” Lau finds that she was never really let in and so as the song continues its shiny happy bounce, her world is crumbling but only for her. “What's it like to play your games and never get a single bruise?” she sings at the end. It’s a song that is tight, concise pop with heartbreak that has rarely been so catchy.
Daylily will be available both as a digital download and also as an addendum to the new CD version of Painted Zeros’ debut album, Floriography, both coming out on Don Giovanni Records.
